The Open Forum on Sustainability and Responsible Sourcing in the Jewelry Industry

How did the Summit idea take shape?

After an early spring 2015 meeting sponsored by the US State Department which brought representatives of all sectors of the industry together to identify and address challenges and risks in the supply chains for our products, a number of industry members came together to discuss actions that could be taken. The take away from the State Department meeting was clear – collective action by industry members themselves to create voluntary systems to encourage responsible sourcing was needed to sustain our business into the 21st century. Initiatives created by those who will be subject to any such systems will ensure they are accessible, purpose fit and achievable by all. A group of volunteers (the Planning Committee) came together and started to talk about how to move these ideas forward. The idea for the Summit came from those discussions.
