Pact Partnership with Anza Gems, Nineteen48 & Everledger

Last fall, at the Jewelry Industry Summit mini-event in Los Angeles, Cristina Villegas of Pact presented on Pact’s collaboration with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This partnership focused on increasing women gem miners’ ability to earn in Tanzania through gemstone education, resulting in dramatic increases in their sales power.

This mining group – like many others working to improve their operations – still face a market structured against them, perpetuating a cycle of poverty.  In working to address this limitation and develop a model to get responsibly mined artisanal gems to markets, Pact has collaborated with the group of miners to co-design a mine-to-market collaboration that is working to empower women miners to work safely, miner better, improve financial security, and create stable, equitable markets for fair trade – Moyo Gems. Adding to this model, a blockchain technology will track and trace the stones all the way through their supply chain. Gemstones from this project for the jewelry sector will be launched this fall.
